Manchester Central Library

The Manchester Central Library reopened to the public after a £50m refurbishment in March 2014.

‘The refurbishment of our library gave us an opportunity to upgrade our old microfilm equipment which was both cumbersome and occupied a lot of desk space.

We wanted a machine that would fit in comfortably with our ‘latest technology’ equipment and offer a wider range of functions than our old microfilm digital reader printers.

Extensive trials were carried out on a number of similar machines and the SL1000 Digital Microfilm Scanner from Covergold provided more than we were looking for.

The Universal Carrier made it easy to load our roll film and microfiche and SL-Touch software enabled us to move the film backwards and forwards at varying speed, enlarge the image, print and many more functions all identified by large icons. We were also attracted by the ability to link the SL1000 to our self-service printing and payment and our computer booking systems.

Eight machines, taking up a fraction of the desk space our old equipment required, are installed in our Archives+ enabling researchers to access all our old microfilm on  modern day state of the art equipment.’
